# Categories

Categories group elements in the AI Toolbox sidebar. Managed under **AI Toolbox → Categories**.

## What they do

Once your Toolbox has more than a handful of elements, an unsorted grid stops being usable. Categories give users a filter rail down the left of the Elements screen: **All elements** first, then one entry per category.

The rail only appears when there is more than one category, so a small Toolbox stays uncluttered.

## Creating a category

Choose **Create category**.

| Field | What it does |
| --------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Label** | The name shown in the sidebar. |
| **Icon** | A symbol shown beside it. A preview appears as you choose. |

## Naming them well

Categories should match how your colleagues think about their work, not how the platform is organised.

| Works | Does not work |
| ------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------- |
| *Customer contact*, *HR*, *Marketing*, *Analysis* | *Text elements*, *Image elements* |
| *Writing*, *Summarising*, *Translating* | *Category 1*, *Misc* |

Two useful patterns: by **department** when different teams use different elements, or by **task** when everyone uses everything. Pick one and stay with it. Mixing the two produces categories that overlap and elements nobody can find.

Aim for three to eight categories. Fewer and the rail is pointless; more and it becomes its own navigation problem.

## Editing and deleting

The row menu offers **Edit category** and **Delete category**.

Deleting a category does not delete its elements. They stay in the Toolbox and appear under **All elements**, but lose their grouping, so reassign them afterwards, or they become hard to find.
